Gilliam threw strop on Grail set
Terry Gilliam has revealed that he threw a diva strop while filming Monty Python And The Holy Grail.
In an Ask Me Anything online chat with fans on Reddit, the Python said that one of his favourite memories of filming with the rest of the comedy group was losing his cool over a stunt.
He said: "I have a great memory of shooting Holy Grail and trying to get the others to kneel down in a hole in the ground with a camera while trying to get their heads under the parapet of the camera so we could throw animals over, and they were all b******s and complaining, and I said, 'Well f*** you! You wrote the script and I'm just trying to make it work for you. And if you don't do this it won't.'
"And then I flounced off in one of my b***** moods, and went off and lay in the tall grass and had a lovely day until we had to film the next bits."
But Terry admitted he owed his career in film, which has included directing Brazil and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, to being part of the Monty Python troupe.
He said: "It was probably the most important thing in my life, because I wouldn't be making movies now if I wasn't a part of Python."
One fan asked if he had felt like the odd one out in Monty Python because he was the only American, or because he also worked on the animations, unlike the others.
He replied: "Both reasons. I was a foreigner, doing a very different job than the rest of them. But what it did allow me was more freedom than the others."
On the upcoming live Monty Python shows, he said: "I'm not excited, it's something to do, it'll be fun while we're doing it, and it will be a relief when it's over. Because then I can get back to my own life."
