Gordon-Levitt's high-flying honour
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has confirmed he will play French high-wire walker Philippe Petit in Reach To The Clouds.
The Don Jon star had been tipped to take the lead role in Robert Zemeckis' big-screen 3D adaptation of Philippe's memoir of the same name, a role which he has officially signed up to.
"Mesdames et Messieurs, it's official. I will have the distinct honour of working for Mr. Robert Zemeckis!" the actor tweeted.
Joseph, an avid Francophile, will have to adopt a French accent for his portrayal, but his past as a gymnast is expected to help him with the physical challenges.
Production will begin in May.
High-wire walker Philippe, the subject of James Marsh's Oscar-winning 2008 documentary Man On Wire, became famous in 1974 when he walked - without permission - across a wire strung 1,350 feet above the ground between the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York.
Joseph - the star, director and writer of romantic comedy Don Jon - will next lend his voice to Jiro Horikoshi in Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, and will star in the Sin City sequel, A Dame To Kill For, alongside Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis and Lady Gaga.
The 33-year-old is also set to produce the film adaptation of Neil Gaiman's graphic novel series The Sandman, which he is in talks to star in and direct.
