Ryan Gosling is holding open castings for the star of his directorial debut How To Catch A Monster.

The Canadian director has advertised online at www.howtocatchamonstercasting.com to find an unknown actor for his surreal film described as "a modern day fairytale, with elements of fantasy noir, horror and suspense."

It follows single mother Billy, played by his Drive co-star Christina Hendricks, and her son Bones, who find themselves fighting separately for survival in a vanishing city.

Ryan is looking for three actors to play Bones, his younger brother Frankie and troublemaker Face.

Bones is described as "an introspective loner with an active imagination. Balancing melancholy intensity with an innocent sense of wonder, he is driven by a strong desire to face his fears. Soulful, offbeat and quietly charismatic."

Frankie is aged between three and six and is described as a "feral boy who is constantly getting into trouble for trying to escape his school and house."

Ryan is seeking actors with unusual distinguishing marks to play Face - "the more uncommon and different-looking the better". The character is described as "a small-town troublemaker from the wrong side of the tracks".

Ryan's description of his film sounds like it may have drawn some inspiration from a David Lynch movie.

"Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, Billy, a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while Bones, her 18-yr-old son, discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive."

Shooting is due to begin in Detroit in May.

Your Horoscopes by Russell Grant

Gemini:

A friend will tell you about a job opening at their company. This lead will turn into a dead end. Don't set your hopes on this possibility. Instead of looking for another job, concentrate on fulfilling your duties. Tempers are running high. The last thing you want is to catch the attention of an irritable superior. If someone does criticise your work, remain silent. These remarks may be terribly unfair, but defending yourself will only make the situation worse. Breathe deep. This, too, shall pass.More
