Griffith defends daughter Dakota

Melanie Griffith said she was proud of her daughter

Melanie Griffith has hit back at internet trolls slamming her daughter Dakota Johnson after she was cast as Anastasia Steele in the 50 Shades Of Grey movie.

Author EL James has confirmed that Dakota, the 23-year-old daughter of Melanie and her actor husband Don Johnson, has been cast opposite Pacific Rim's Charlie Hunnam as Christian Grey in the big screen adaptation of her best-selling kinky novel.

Fans tweeted that they didn't think the actors were right for the parts, with some complaining Dakota only got the role thanks to her famous parents.

Melanie replied to one "Wow! You're quite the b**** aren't you? #don'tmesswithmama"

The Working Girl star also tweeted: "My beautiful child Dakota has been chosen to play Anna Steele in 50 Shades!!! Look out world! Here she comes!!! #proudmama"

Producer Dan Brunetti also defended the casting on Twitter, as well as retweeting a string of abusive messages he had received over the decision.

He said: "There is a lot that goes into casting that isn't just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc.

"So if your favourite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective."
