Harris and Elba honoured at awards

Screen stars Naomie Harris and Idris Elba - soon to be seen starring in an acclaimed Nelson Mandela biopic - were both honoured at a magazine awards bash tonight.

Harris, who portrays Winnie Mandela in the film, took the best British actress title at the Harper's Bazaar Women of the Year Awards.

Elba, who stars as the former South African president in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, was the big male winner at the event staged at Claridge's in London, collecting the man of the year prize.

The team behind ITV's Downton Abbey, as well as the cast, collected a prize for their special contribution to British drama, while Cate Blanchett - who appears on the cover of the fashion magazine's December issue - was named best international actress.

Victoria Beckham was rewarded for her special contribution to British fashion, while Gillian Anderson was named the television icon.

Sir Mick Jagger, no stranger to prizes after a pop career lasting half a century, saw his fashion designer girlfriend L'Wren Scott collect an award as she was named tastemaker of the year.

Harry Potter creator JK Rowling was named inspiration of the year for her talent and her commitment to her charity for disadvantaged children, Lumos.

Singer Rita Ora collected an award for her musical contribution and Jourdan Dunn was model of the year.

Harper's Bazaar editor-in-chief Justine Picardie said the awards were "a timely reminder of the incredible achievements that women have made in the worlds of fashion, art, business, books, philanthropy, film and theatre".

"This year's winners are all truly remarkable, with talents and ambitions that are matched by their heartfelt commitment and compassion," she added.
