Hathaway surprised to sing in Rio

Anne Hathaway didn't expect she'd be singing in her new animated film Rio.

The actress has admitted she was taken by surprise when she was given a song in the bird tale set in South America.

"I didn't know I was going to have to sing, they added that after I signed my contract so I couldn't say no!" she laughed.

Singers Jamie Foxx and Will.i.am also lend their voices to the movie from the makers of Ice Age.

She explained: "I just think I was lucky, they probably needed a female voice in there and all the other great singers in the movie most of them are male, so I think I was just in the right place at the right time for that."

The 28-year-old says the voice work was "just as hard as anything else."

"I don't consider it a change of pace," she admitted.

Anne said capturing the emotion of the story was important. "I heard about this movie two or three years ago. I was so captivated by this idea of learning how to fly, of learning to find your heartbeat and that something about that gives you the confidence to be able to soar."

"We didn't have a script, there were a few pictures that they showed me, they had a great idea and that's the movie that resulted, it's so beautiful and big hearted. I'm very honoured to be a part of it," she said.

Ahead of the film's UK release in April, producers laid on a special party in LA to announce a special edition of the massively popular mobile app Angry Birds based around the movie.
