Helms to star in Naked Gun reboot

Ed Helms has been cast in the lead role in a reboot of The Naked Gun.

The Hangover actor will star as bumbling Detective Frank Drebin, the character made famous by late actor Leslie Nielsen in the spoof crime thriller comedies, reported Variety.

Paramount has hired Night At The Museum writers Thomas Lennon and R Ben Garant to pen the screenplay.

Earlier this year Naked Gun creator David Zucker said he thought there was potential to bring back the movies, which came out between 1988 and 1994, in a modern setting with a new generation in the starring roles.

He told Hollywood.com: " There are people who can do [what Nielsen did] and they're not famous. You wouldn't know who they were. But I know actors who can do it. Again, I think Paramount has an international brand in Naked Gun and I think there's something you can do."

Nielsen died in 2010 at the age of 84.
