Christina Hendricks is being lined up for a new indie role

Christina Hendricks has landed a starring role in a new indie drama.

The Mad Men actress will play the lead in the big screen adaptation of Joan Didion's novel A Book Of Common Prayer, reported Variety.

She will star as Charlotte Douglas, an American woman "who arrives in a fictional Central American country that is on the verge of revolution and inexplicably imagines it is the place where she will be reunited with her fugitive 19-year-old daughter".

Director Campbell Scott and producer Marcia Weiss said they were "thrilled" that the 37-year-old actress had signed up.

"Charlotte is a complex and compelling character and Christina is the perfect actor to play her," they added.

Christina has several projects lined up, included Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, How To Catch A Monster.
