Hiddleston heading for Skull Island

Tom Hiddleston is to star in the upcoming King Kong origins movie.

The Thor actor has signed up for Skull Island in what is thought to be the lead role, it has been announced.

Plot details aren't known, but the film is expected to be centred on the giant gorilla's world.

Studio Legendary said in a statement: "Previous works have touched on the island, but staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions."

Jordan Vogt-Roberts will direct the movie, which is due to be unveiled in 2016.

It comes after Peter Jackson's 2005 King Kong film, which starred Naomi Watts and Jack Black.
