Les Miserables director Tom Hooper has said he owes his whole career to his love of musicals.
The filmmaker won an Oscar for The King's Speech in 2010 and has gone on to direct an epic adaptation of hit musical Les Mis, and he revealed it was a role in a school musical that got him started.
Tom revealed: "Weirdly I was cast in the school musical when I was 10 or 11 and fell in love with acting, drama, theatre, this whole world through that.
"So I owe sitting here today to the musical, because I was cast in one as a kid."
The British director was determined to follow up his Oscar-winning film The King's Speech with something as different as possible, which led him to Les Miserables.
He said: "After finishing The King's Speech I really wanted to do something very different and to challenge myself.
"I was fortunate enough to have some success and I wanted to use that to take a risk, rather than to try to do the same thing again, or be conservative. And what could be more risky than a movie musical?"
