Ice Cube: NWA biopic in the works

Ice Cube has confirmed an NWA film is in the pipeline, charting the rise of the US hip-hop group.

The rapper-turned-actor, whose real name is O'Shea Jackson, was one of the original line-up of the band, which formed in 1986, alongside Arabian Prince (Mik Lezan), Dr Dre (Andre Young), Eazy-E (Eric Wright) and DJ Yella (Antoine Carraby). MC Ren (Lorenzo Patterson) joined the group in 1988.

The 44-year-old told Access Hollywood: "We're actually going to put together an NWA movie to show the whole [story]. We're putting it together with director F Gary Gray, who directed me in Friday."

Ice, who next stars in comedy Ride Along with funnyman Kevin Hart, said the biopic, tentatively titled Straight Outta Compton, has the backing of the band members.

"We got everybody. Dr Dre is on as a producer. I'm in... Ren, everybody and Eazy's estate is in... So yeah, we are looking forward to that," he continued.

The NWA biopic has been in the works since 2012, with Boyz N The Hood filmmaker John Singleton previously attached to direct.

There have been rumours that Ice's son O'Shea Jackson II would play his father, while Lil Eazy E would portray his late father Eazy-E.

Ice confirmed that he will not be playing himself on the big screen: "Somebody is going to play us," he said.
