Ice-T raps younger hip-hop artists

Rap superstars Ice-T and Melle Mel have slammed the state of today's rap scene.

The hip-hop heavyweights were reunited at the European premiere of Ice-T's directorial debut Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap in London's Hammersmith Apollo, where they made history with a once-in-a-lifetime performance on stage, which was simulcast live to more than 70 cinemas nationwide.

Ice-T, whose real name is Tracy Marrow, was joined by wife Coco, showing off her curves in a low-cut mini-dress and red patent heels.

The 54-year-old said he is unimpressed with today's hip-hop artists, saying: "It's just pop. You're not going to get anything as raw as what we heard before. It lacks concept - most tracks are about clubbing and partying."

Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five's Melle Mel (Melvin Glover) agreed. Melle, 51, said: "The younger guys don't look as good as us! They definitely don't have our skills and that's what the art of rap is. They are not on our level."

For the documentary film, Ice-T spoke to 47 rap artists including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Dr Dre, Run-DMC, Kanye West and Common.

"Today is a great day. I like the turnout," said the first-time director of the star-studded attendance.

Public Enemy's Chuck D - who was born Carlton Ridenhour - said he was proud to show his support. He said: "Ice-T is the only guy who could have made this film. The ultimate highlight of my career is being here tonight."

Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon (Corey Woods) was accompanied by fellow band member Ghostface Killah.

Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap is in cinemas now.
