Ifans joins Alice In Wonderland 2

Rhys Ifans has signed up for the Alice In Wonderland sequel.

The Welsh actor will play Zanik Hightopp, the father of Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter, reported The Wrap.

Mark Rylance had previously been linked to the role.

As well as Johnny, Rhys joins Mia Wasikowska, who is returning as Alice in the follow-up to Disney's 2010 billion-dollar blockbuster.

Helena Bonham Carter will be back as the Red Queen and Sacha Baron Cohen is joining the cast as a villain named Time.

It is yet to be revealed whether other Alice In Wonderland stars such as Anne Hathaway and Alan Rickman, who played the White Queen and the Caterpillar, will reprise their roles.

The sequel is to be titled Through The Looking Glass and is based on author Lewis Carroll's own follow-up story.

James Bobin will direct the movie, taking over from the previous film's director Tim Burton.
