ITV axes James Nesbitt's Monroe

James Nesbitt is back as Monroe

ITV has confirmed that Monroe, which starred James Nesbitt in the lead as maverick neurosurgeon Dr Gabriel Monroe, had not been commissioned for a third series.

An ITV spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Monroe will not be returning.

“It has been a fantastic series, but continuing to refresh our slate is an important part of the creative process.”

Fans of the show took to Twitter yesterday to express their disappointment at the news of the axe.

One posted: “Not happy to hear that ITV has cancelled Monroe after two series.

“One of the best programmes on that channel.”
