Jacobi in running for Hannibal role

Derek Jacobi was in the running to play Hannibal Lecter in The Silence Of The Lambs

Sir Derek Jacobi has revealed that he could have played cold-blooded serial killer Hannibal Lecter in Silence Of The Lambs.

The Vicious star admitted he and Daniel Day-Lewis were the three finalists for the role, which eventually went to Sir Anthony Hopkins, reported The Wrap.

Sir Anthony's performance in Jonathan Demme's film won him an Oscar for best actor and is one of his best known roles.

In his new autobiography As Luck Would Have It, Derek wrote: "I was one of the three finalists for the casting of Hannibal Lecter for The Silence Of The Lambs: the others were Daniel Day-Lewis and Tony Hopkins. They were determined to have a Brit for their villain - I'm not sure what this says about us."

The 74-year-old - who has starred in films like The King's Speech, My Week With Marilyn and Gladiator, and enjoyed an acclaimed stage career - said his version of Hannibal would have been different from Anthony's.

"Goodness knows how it would have turned out if I had played the part, but I would have been malevolent in a very different way," he said.

"Tony has harder eyes than I have. He was wonderful," he added.
