James-Collier: I'll play Mercury

Rob James-Collier has thrown his hat into the ring to play Freddie Mercury in the biopic of the Queen singer.

Sacha Baron Cohen was signed up to play the late great rock star in a film about his life, but quit the project in July because he disagreed with producers over the tone of the film.

Now Rob - famous for playing footman Thomas in Downton Abbey - has confessed he's always wanted to play Freddie.

Rob said: "I would like to play Freddie Mercury in a biopic of his life.

"I like Queen. Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon - dudes. They don't make 'em like Freddie any more.

"I've got the same skin pallor, I've got the bright red lips, I've got the nose, I've got the hairy chest, I just can't sing... they can dub that over, can't they?"

The actor admits he can't dance either, but he doesn't see it as a problem.

Rob said: "He strutted, didn't he? He was never a dancer, he was a strutter, I'll go to strutting school, I'll do whatever it takes to strut like him. He worked the microphone as well. Leopard skin, tights, I'll do the lot.

"That is something I'd genuinely love to do. It's never going to happen..."

:: Downton Abbey is back on ITV on Sunday September 22.
