Jena Malone has been cast as the lead in Lonely Hunter, an indie biopic of writer Carson McCullers.
The star of Donnie Darko and Sucker Punch will play the late Southern Gothic novelist and playwright, whose books include The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter and The Member Of The Wedding, in the film covering 35 years of Carson's life, Variety reports.
Carson had many famous friends including Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Gypsy Rose Lee and WH Auden who will feature in the film but are yet to be cast.
The biopic will be directed by Hounddog's Deborah Kampmeier.
Carson suffered several strokes in her youth and by the age of 31 was paralysed down her left side. She was also an alcoholic.
She separated from her first husband, ex-soldier and aspiring writer, Reeves McCullers, in 1940 and moved to New York with George Davis, the editor of Harper's Bazaar, where she made many of her famous friends.
In 1945, Carson and Reeves remarried and moved to Paris. Three years later, she attempted suicide while depressed. In 1953, Reeves tried to convince her to commit suicide with him, but she fled and he killed himself in a Paris hotel room.
Carson died of a brain haemorrhage aged 50 in 1967.
