JJ Abrams has sparked rumours that R2-D2 will be appearing in Star Wars: Episode VII.
The filmmaker's company Bad Robot tweeted a behind-the-scenes photo, which features the robot, director JJ and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
It is captioned: "Hi from the workshop! #StarWarsVII."
While the image doesn't reveal anything about the plot, it has triggered speculation that the much-loved droid will appear in the new film.
Fans have been hoping that R2 and his robot friend C-3PO might appear in Episode VII.
R2-D2, an astromech droid, has appeared in all six previous Star Wars movies since 1977.
So far little is known about JJ's film but it is thought that original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill will be back.
Film bosses are also holding open auditions to fill two roles.
The film is due to be released in 2015.
