Joaquin Phoenix looks set to star in filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson's new comedy.
The pair recently worked together on The Master, which has netted Joaquin a best actor Oscar nomination, and now the star is in talks to join the director's film Inherent Vice, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
If Joaquin signs up for the 60s-set movie, he will play a pot-smoking detective who is trying to solve a kidnapping case.
Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr was previously linked to the role in the film, which is an adaptation of a 2009 novel by American author Thomas Pynchon.
Anderson, who has not tackled comedy before, will write and direct Inherent Vice.
