Jodie Foster joins cast of Elysium

Jodie Foster has signed up to star in Elysium

Jodie Foster has signed up to star in Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi film Elysium.

The Oscar-winning actress joins Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley in the District 9 director's new project, Deadline reports.

Elysium is shrouded in secrecy but reportedly it will be set in the future and, like the acclaimed District 9 which earned four Oscar nominations, will have an underlying social message.

The film is gathering a cast before it is pitched to studios for distribution but there are high expectations on Neill, who made a hit out of indie project District 9, starring an unknown cast of South African actors including Sharlto who has gone on to land a string of Hollywood roles, including in The A Team.

Jodie most recently completed directing and starring alongside Mel Gibson in The Beaver, which is due for release in April.

She also stars alongside Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly in God Of Carnage, an adaptation of Yasmina Reza's Tony-winning play directed by Roman Polanski.
