Jodie Whittaker’s first portrayal of the Doctor viewed more than 16m times
The video announced the arrival of Whittaker as the latest Doctor Who star.
The video unveiling Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor has been watched more than 16 million times online.
The 60-second clip aired on BBC One after the Wimbledon men’s final on Sunday and was posted online via the broadcaster’s Facebook page and the Doctor Who Twitter account.
On Facebook it has been watched almost 10m times while the 2.5 million views on the tweeted clip – which itself has been retweeted 73,000 times – make it the most successful Doctor Who tweet of all time, the BBC said.
Piers Wenger, controller of BBC Drama, said: “To see the overwhelmingly positive response to the news that Jodie Whittaker will star as the Thirteenth Doctor, and know that the reveal has had over 16 million views online so far, is just phenomenal.
“It’s exhilarating to see Doctor Who engaging with people on so many different levels and I cannot wait for the audience to see her in action on BBC One this Christmas.”
In the clip, a hooded Whittaker is seen walking towards the Tardis in the middle of a forest before revealing herself to the camera.
