John C Reilly has revealed his real life relationship with Cyrus co-star Marisa Tomei was mirrored on screen.
The Stepbrothers star plays divorced loner John in the Duplass brothers' drama, and was encouraged by the filmmaking siblings not to bond too quickly with the Wrestler actress, who portrays his love interest Molly, so their blossoming relationship could be captured on camera at the same time.
"We were encouraged not to do anything, I think I said, 'Hi, how are you?' and that was it when we first met - what you see is what you get, so as Marisa and I are getting to know each other in the movie, it was almost the virtual same timeline in real life," he said.
John recalled feeling out of depth during his scenes with Marisa, because Mark and Jay Duplass also encouraged him to act without their stern direction.
"Moments I felt more at sea were the relationship scenes, the intimate scenes with Marisa. I'm quite a modest person so I felt more in need of direction in those moments," he admitted.
