Johnny Depp beaten by Paddington in the box office
Hollywood star Johnny Depp has been trounced in the box office by a marmalade-loving bear.
Crime caper Mortdecai, the new Hollywood film starring Depp alongside big names Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor and Paul Bettany, opened in the UK last Friday following a blaze of publicity from its all-star cast.
But box office figures from Rentrak show that the film, which has been panned by critics, took only £484,878 in its opening weekend.
Paddington, featuring Ben Whishaw voicing the role of the duffle-coat-wearing bear, took £748,628 at the weekend, despite it being its ninth week in UK cinemas. Paddington bear’s big-screen outing has made almost £35m in the UK box office since its release on November 28 last year.
