Johnny Depp joins Black Mass movie

Johnny Depp is being linked to a role in Black Mass

Johnny Depp looks set to play mobster James "Whitey" Bulger in a new movie.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star is currently attached to the coveted role in crime thriller Black Mass, according to Deadline.

The film's title is taken from journalists Dick Lehr and Gerald O'Neill's book Black Mass: The True Story Of An Unholy Alliance Between The FBI And The Irish Mob, and the movie will follow the mob kingpin, who masterminded a violent gang in Boston while also turning federal informant.

The project is a co-production between Cross Creek and Nigel Sinclair and Guy East's Exclusive Media, and will be directed by Barry Levinson.

Cross Creek's Brian Oliver said: "I could not be more thrilled to have the biggest star in the world and Academy Award winning director Barry Levinson to finally bring this incredible story to the big screen."

Johnny's film isn't the only one about Bulger in the pipeline - Ben Affleck is also hoping to make a flick about the notorious crook, with his friend Matt Damon expected to play the lead.
