Johnson: GI Joe role is a dream

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson says nothing beats a good movie fight

Dwayne Johnson has revealed why his role in GI Joe: Retaliation is a childhood dream come true.

The 17-time World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) champion, also known by his ring name The Rock, plays Roadblock in Jon M Chu's reboot, which also stars Channing Tatum and Bruce Willis.

"As a kid, I loved playing with the GI Joe action figures. I am into this franchise and have been since I was a kid," he said.

Any film in the GI Joe franchise wouldn't be true to its background without its boys' toys - souped-up vehicles like tanks, helicopters, planes and motorcycles, and an elaborate cache of weaponry.

The 40-year-old admitted: "Between the big toys on set, the actors, the franchise and the 3D technology, it all just reminded me of how fun and cool movie-making can be. I was very lucky because my character had the distinct privilege of driving the world's fastest tank and firing some pretty massive weapons. It's a big kick."

Dwayne - who gets to kick butt on screen with British actor Ray Stevenson, who plays Roadblock's nemesis Firefly - admitted he loves handling weapons.

"I can enjoy good weaponry and fighting, whether it's something with rounds and bullets or swords. But there's nothing like a knuckle sandwich," he said.

"The fight with Ray was pretty challenging because Jon had the idea of creating a fighting style that hadn't been seen before on film. Ray and I were working on that for weeks to try and get that down."
