Dwayne Johnson has dropped hints about playing a "Superman-like character" in a future DC film - leading to speculation that he will take on the role of Shazam.

Speculation was sparked after the Hercules star told Total Film that it is a character with superhuman powers like the Man Of Steel. Shazam, originally known as Captain Marvel, has Superman-level abilities, which are activated when he says the word "Shazam!"

"This character has the power of Superman, he could throw down... Just say the word. That's all I'm gonna say," he teased.

A Shazam movie is rumoured to be on the horizon for 2016.

Dwayne, also known as The Rock, also revealed he wanted to play Green Lantern, before Ryan Reynolds took the role.

"It's not Green Lantern by the way. John Stewart (Green Lantern) was a character I wanted to play but there was already a version of Green Lantern and so I'm going in a different direction," he continued.

The 42-year-old said he has been in talks with DC about playing one of their characters for a few years.

"DC and I have been talking for a couple of years now about trying to find the right character. It's tricky too because there's baggage - and it's good baggage - that I have," he said.

Dwayne continued cryptically: "I am a certain way. My wiring is my wiring, my DNA is my DNA. When I step on screen, I'm aware of what I'm able to bring to a character and so is DC so it's not the easiest thing.

"But I will say this: there is a character out there that we're gonna announce really soon, that I'm gonna play."
