Kravitz: Friends hated 'diet me'

Zoe Kravitz has revealed she suffered mood swings when she lost weight for a role.

The Divergent actress had to start shedding 20lb halfway through the shoot to play an anorexic for The Road Within, and admitted that the weight loss affected her emotions.

"My friends all hated me; I was drinking clay, garlic and pineapple juice and then going running," she told Vogue.

"My friends came to keep me busy at night - to stop me getting angry - and we started recording music," she added.

Zoe - the daughter of musician Lenny and actress Lisa Bonet - admitted that losing weight and dieting isn't easy.

"I am always on a diet for a film and I love to eat. I have this big fat black woman inside me waiting to come out," she said.

The 25-year-old, who stars alongside Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet in Divergent, has a number of films on the cards including the Mad Max remake Fury Road, indie drama Good Kill with Ethan Hawke and a coming-of-age drama with Dakota Fanning.

Zoe, who is also the frontwoman of band Lolawolf, said performing as a group feels more "vulnerable" than acting.

"It feels very vulnerable. In acting, you have so much to hide behind - your costumes, your character, you take direction. Whereas on stage, you have to look at the audience, you connect with them and these new songs are like my diary; I can't hide behind anything," she admitted.
