Leighton Meester not in Mars movie

Leighton Meester will not be appearing in the Veronica Mars movie, it has been announced.

The Gossip Girl actress played Carrie Bishop in some episodes of the TV series and it was thought she might reprise the role in the upcoming film adaptation.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Leighton will not be able to appear because of scheduling conflicts, so Twin Sister singer Andrea Estella will take on the role.

Series creator Rob Thomas revealed the casting news in an email to backers of the film's kickstarter campaign, which was held to raise two million US dollars to help fund the big screen adaptation of the cult TV show.

He said: "Sadly, Leighton was doing a different movie during the same time frame on the wrong coast. In the end, she was unavailable."

He went on: "One of the reasons I wanted Leighton, beyond her talent/beauty/history in the show, was that we needed a performer who could sing in this important role. Once it became evident that we couldn't make Leighton's schedule work, I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie."

Kristen Bell will be back as Veronica in the film and other actors signed up to appear include Tina Majorino, Francis Capra, Brandon Hillock, Kevin Sheridan, Jonathan Chesner, Sam Huntington, Amanda Noret, Daran Norris, Chris Lowell, Percy Daggs III, Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni.

Veronica Mars the movie is slated for release in 2014.
