Christopher Lloyd is to star in indie drama The Boat Builder.

The Back To The Future star has replaced Nebraska's Bruce Dern to play a former Merchant Marine captain who constructs a seaworthy vessel in his garden in Arnold Grossman's film, reported Deadline.

Malcolm In The Middle actress Jane Kaczmarek has been cast as his screen daughter Katherine, who opposes his idea, while newcomer Tekola Cornetet will play Rick, a bright foster child who befriends him during his quest.

Filming is expected to start in San Francisco in coming weeks.

The Boat Builder is Arnold's first film, having been an author and former political strategist who produced videos for Democratic candidates such as Pat Schroeder, Gary Hart and Leon Panetta.

Christopher, who played Emmett 'Doc' Brown in the Back To The Future trilogy, will next be seen in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.
