Love Actually 'most romantic film'

Hugh Grant's film Love Actually has topped a romance poll

Love Actually has been named the nation's most romantic movie in a new study into viewers' emotional reactions.

The poll ahead of Valentine's Day this Thursday found the 2003 tale - starring Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Liam Neeson, triumphed ahead of other love stories such as Dirty Dancing and Ghost.

Online movie rental firm LoveFilm examined the neurological responses of couples to what they saw on screen, with the Richard Curtis-directed tale giving the strongest reaction.

The Notebook, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, was runner-up.

Other films on the list included Disney robot romance Wall-E in third place and another Richard Curtis classic Notting Hill in fourth, followed by Patrick Swayze hits Dirty Dancing and Ghost.

The top 10 was completed by Julia Roberts romcom Pretty Woman, James Cameron's epic tearjerker Titanic, Tom Cruise hit Jerry Maguire and black-and-white classic Casablanca.

Neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis, of Mindlab International, who analysed the reactions, said: "When a couple watch a romance together each person mistakenly attributes a part of the adrenaline buzz produced by the film to the presence of their partner.

"Couples are far more likely to touch, hold, hug and kiss one another than couples watching a less emotional film."

LoveFilm editor Helen Cowley said: "Our research shows that romantic movies can cause a romantic reaction, which is why snuggling up with a carefully chosen film is the perfect way to spend time together this Valentine's Day."
