Twilight hunk Kellan Lutz is set to be Hercules in Hercules 3D.

The 28-year-old, who is best known for playing vampire Emmett Cullen in the Twilight films, has signed on to play the Greek demigod in Renny Harlin's film.

The director told The Hollywood Reporter: "It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history - and Kellan has exactly that, personality. He's not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character, and he impressed me with his passion and heart."

He added: "This is a breakout role for Kellan and a chance to grow and shine as an actor."

Executive producer Boaz Davidson said: "Kellan has the look and charisma that Harlin envisioned for the character. Renny had him in mind from the start and we are really excited to have him on board."

Shooting on the big-budget movie is scheduled to begin in Bulgaria in May.

Hercules 3D is the second film being made in Hollywood about the Greek demigod, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson portraying the character in the rival project, to be directed by Rush Hour's Brett Ratner.

As well as starring in the Twilight films, former model Kellan has also appeared in Immortals, Arena and A Nightmare On Elm Street.

He will next star in Reinhard Klooss' Tarzan and action drama Java Heat alongside Mickey Rourke.
