Mackintosh has hopes for Hathaway

Cameron Mackintosh would love to see Anne Hathaway in Les Mis on stage

Les Miserables producer Cameron Mackintosh has admitted he would love to see Anne Hathaway reprise her role of Fantine on Broadway.

The 28-year-old show will return to New York following the huge success of the movie of the musical and Anne has said she would jump at the chance to take part in a short run.

Speaking at the British Consul's reception for British Oscar nominees in Los Angeles, musical guru Cameron said: "I would love her to do it but I'm not sure she means it.

"That performance she's done is so incredible but it's an entirely cinematic performance. You couldn't do that in the same way on stage.

"If she wants to reinvent it in another way and come on stage, I would be thrilled."
