Mark Strong saddles up for western

Mark Strong will star in Dexter Fletcher's upcoming film Provenance

Mark Strong is to star in a new western directed by Dexter Fletcher.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels star Dexter made his directorial debut with Wild Bill last year, a heartfelt British drama about a father trying to bond with his two sons after being released from prison.

Dexter told The Guardian his next project, Provenance, will be a full-blown western set in Arizona, with Mark in the lead role.

He said: "I've always loved westerns but have never been able to be in one.

"I tried to work a lot western ideas into Wild Bill and I feel really lucky to be able to actually get to make one of my own, in real western country."

BBC films are backing the project and young rising star Sammy Williams, who worked with Dexter on Wild Bill and also appeared in Joe Cornish's Attack The Block, has been confirmed to star alongside Mark.

Mark has recently been filming a new thriller about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, directed by The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow, in which he plays a CIA agent.
