Matthew Vaughn was offered Bond
Matthew Vaughn has revealed that he almost directed Daniel Craig in Casino Royale.
The Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class filmmaker said that he had talks about reuniting with Daniel, who he directed in Layer Cake, for the reboot of the 007 films.
"I had a lot of meetings on Casino Royale, s o much so that the head of MGM offered me it," he told Empire.
"I had a 24-hour period where I thought I was directing Casino Royale."
He said that the experience of not getting the deal finalised was "a bit of a downer", with GoldenEye filmmaker Martin Campbell getting the gig.
The director is now tackling the spy genre with Kingsman: The Secret Service, starring Colin Firth as a veteran secret agent, alongside Sir Michael Caine and Samuel L Jackson.
He said of casting the British actor as a spy: "I just wanted someone where, when he starts kicking the s**t out of people, you cannot believe it's him."
