Rachel McAdams has revealed it was second time lucky for filmmaker Richard Curtis, after she turned down a role in Notting Hill.
The Notebook star plays Mary opposite Domhnall Gleeson as time-travelling Tim in the new romantic drama About Time, which Richard wrote and directed.
And Rachel revealed she also had the chance to star in 1999's Notting Hill, which Richard penned and produced.
"I turned down Notting Hill. He wasn't directing it!" said the actress.
She added of her latest role: "I loved that Richard was directing this. I so felt his connection to the material and it was such a reflection of him, which I came to learn.
"I just love the sentiment behind it and the protagonists can be a good team when things fall apart around them. I hadn't expected that and it's not usually what happens with a boy-meets-girl story."
Rachel admitted she didn't have to audition for the role, but still put herself through her paces in case the filmmaker changed his mind.
"I felt like I did audition. I wanted to impress him so badly and I fumbled through the whole thing," she recalled.
"We talked on the phone a bit, and I said, 'I'm not funny, I can't do this, you don't want me'. As if I was trying to talk myself out of the job."
