McQueen to receive directing award

Steve McQueen is to be presented with a top filmmaking award at a US festival.

The British filmmaker will be honoured with the Director Of The Year Award for his latest movie 12 Years A Slave at the 2014 Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Festival chairman Harold Matzner called the director a "soaring talent" who " captivates his audiences by challenging them with often unorthodox and unrelenting subject matter and technique".

Hunger and Shame director Steve follows in the footsteps of filmmakers such as Ang Lee, Sean Penn, David O Russell and Robert Zemeckis , who have previously won the trophy.

His latest film 12 Years A Slave stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Fassbender and follows a free man who is abducted and sold into slavery.

Other Hollywood stars due to be honoured at the event in January include Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConaughey, who will both receive Desert Palm Achievement Awards. Bruce Dern will be presented with the Career Achievement Award.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival runs from January 3-13, 2014, and the awards gala will be held on January 4.
