Naked Gun creator David Zucker has revealed he has been thinking about rebooting the franchise.
The writer and director of the spoof crime thriller comedies, starring Leslie Nielsen as Detective Frank Drebin, told Hollywood.com he believes there is potential to bring back the Naked Gun films, which came out between 1988 and 1994, in a modern setting, with a new generation in the starring roles.
Zucker said: "You could do another Naked Gun, with a reboot. Like Star Trek.
"There are people who can do [what Leslie Nielsen did] and they're not famous. You wouldn't know who they were. But I know actors who can do it.
"Again, I think Paramount has an international brand in Naked Gun and I think there's something you can do."
The filmmaker's latest film - Scary Movie V, which he wrote and produced - is about to be released.
Meanwhile, he thinks cinema needs a new spoof crime caper, that isn't an exact reboot of Naked Gun.
Zucker went on: "There's room for a Naked Gun style. A bumbling guy in a position where he's respected. Leslie Nielsen played Lieutenant Frank Drebin and nobody seemed to have a clue that he's an idiot. I want to do the character, but not the specific [film]. Not Naked Gun."
