Mike Newell hopes to film in Reykjavik in the spring

Mike Newell has said the incredible city of Reykjavik is like a character of its own in his new film.

The director of Four Weddings And A Funeral and Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, is about to begin filming Reykjavik, about the 1986 summit between the USSR and the USA which resulted in the end of the Cold War, starring Michael Douglas as US president Ronald Reagan and Christoph Waltz as Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Mike revealed: "Some of it we're going to do in Reykjavik. I just got back from Reykjavik and it's magnificent, it's a wonderful place. It's as far from Washington and Moscow as you could possibly be. It's the ultimate small town, set in a mythic landscape, a kind of JRR Tolkien landscape.

"So the place itself brings something quite unexpected and extraordinary to the story. And then you've got these two guys who find themselves, they didn't meant to do it, ending the Cold War right there in front of you. And it's a wonderful unknown story."

The Great Expectations director admitted film-making had to be timed just right, as Iceland has almost no daylight during the winter months.

He said: "At the moment it's 23 hours of dark, but in the summer it is 23 hours of daylight. We're going there in the spring, so we hope we get about even stevens."
