Ninja Turtles movie to get sequel

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film is getting a sequel after storming the box office at the weekend.

The comic book adaptation - starring Megan Fox alongside computer-generated renditions of the pizza-eating, sewer-dwelling superheroes - took 65 million US dollars (£38.7 million) at the weekend box office in America to take the number one spot, and was the top movie in several other countries.

Movie bosses said the film exceeded expectations as they announced that they would be getting to work on a follow up, according to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog.

Adam Goodman, president of Paramount's film group, said: "Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before.

"The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story."

The sequel is set for release on June 3, 2016 and will see the return of producer Michael Bay.

It has not been announced whether director Jonathan Liebesman will be back.
