Two young dancers from Northern Ireland will be showing off their fancy footwork this weekend when they take part in the live semi-finals of Sky One’s new talent show Got To Dance.

Rachel McCartan, 19, from Belfast and 20-year-old Dungannon man Gerard Carroll are hoping that their mix of modern and traditional Irish dancing will win them a place in the grand final of the programme, hosted by Davina McCall.

The pair, who met at the Armstrong School of Dance in west Belfast, are one of six acts competing in the semi-finals this Sunday.

Two of the acts who win the most public votes will then go through to the final on Valentine’s night, joining four other acts chosen from two previous semi-finals.

Rachel and Gerard - who perform under the name Fancy Feet - are the only contenders from Northern Ireland and the only Irish dancing act.

Rachel, a fitness instructor, said taking part in Got To Dance was a dream come true.

“We did the auditions last October and were surprised but delighted to get through to the final 18 for the live shows,” she said.

“Gerard has been dancing for around 20 years but I’m relatively new to it as I only took it up five years ago.

“Our dancing is a blend of contemporary with traditional and we’re the only act doing this kind of thing.

“The feedback from the judges so far has been amazing. We were told we had great stage presence and were amazing to watch, but at the end of the day, it’s down to the public - and they only have five minutes to vote.”

Got To Dance is the first competition Rachel and Gerard have entered as Fancy Feet.

Rachel said: “We’re both nervous but really excited about the live shows.

“We’re just going to go out there and give it a go and hope that the people at home like what they see.”

Got To Dance is aired on Sky One on Sunday at 6pm.

Fancy Feet, you did Irish Dancing proud on Got to Dance Semi Final. As good as the best of them!
