Derry-based film company Convergent Media has been invited by President Barack Obama to film scenes of a movie in the White House.

Buena Vista Social Club — Adios is the first project of the company set up last year by US media law firm SmithDehn LLP and is following the famous Cuban band on its final world tour.

The scenes, which were filmed yesterday, documented the historic moment when Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club became the first Cuba-based musicians to perform at the White House since the Cuban revolution.

The band’s introduction to President Obama will be included in the film.

Company founder Russell Smith said: “It is very unusual for the White House and the president to grant this kind of access and what makes it all the more special is that we are filming the final tour of this Cuban band at the very time when there is a thaw in the relations between the US and Cuba.”
