Octavia Spencer joins Insurgent
Octavia Spencer is to star in the Divergent sequel, Insurgent.
The Oscar-winning actress has been cast as Johanna Reyes, the leader of the Amity faction in the second instalment of Veronica Roth's futuristic novels, reported Deadline.
The Help star will join returning cast members Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet and Theo James, who will reprise their roles from the first film in the franchise.
Insurgent, which will be released in March 2015, sees the stakes raised for Beatrice 'Tris' Prior (Shailene) on the run with Tobias 'Four' Eaton (Theo), as they try to escape the attention of power-hungry Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews (Kate).
Divergent, the first film in the franchise, has surpassed the 250 million US dollars (£148 million) mark in the worldwide box office. It is Lionsgate's highest-grossing US release since The Hunger Games and Twilight series.
Octavia, who won the best supporting actress Oscar in 2011 for playing Minny Jackson in The Help, next stars in the James Brown biopic Get On Up and Snowpiercer. The 43-year-old can also be seen in drama Fruitvale Station alongside Michael B Jordan.
On the small screen, she stars in Steven Spielberg-produced Red Band Society, which has been renewed for a full series by Fox.
