Pacific Rim 2 release confirmed

Guillermo del Toro is officially set to make a follow up to Pacific Rim.

A sequel to the director's 2013 sci-fi action film - set in the future when specialist pilots power giant robots to battle monsters who have taken over the world - was in the pipeline before the first movie was even released in cinemas.

And it has now been announced that the second instalment is going ahead and will be released in cinemas on April 7, 2017.

Pacific Rim 2 will be unveiled in both 3D and Imax 3D.

The first film starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi, but it has not been confirmed whether they will definitely return.

However, the director recently said the screenplay for the sequel follows Charlie and Rinko's characters.
