Pacino didn't want to repeat a role

Al Pacino stars in Stand Up Guys

Al Pacino has admitted he had to think twice before he took on his new gangster role.

The 73-year-old stars alongside Christopher Walken as retired gangsters Val and Doc, who reunite for one epic last night, in action comedy Stand Up Guys.

Pacino revealed he was a little hesitant about signing up despite the strong script and having Oscar-winning director Fisher Stevens on board.

"I tend to think twice when I'm given things in that genre because I've done a few and you don't want to repeat yourself," The Godfather and Scarface actor said.

"But I felt this was a little off beat. It was a little bit about friendship and had a certain humour to it. And it's a character that I don't think I've played," he said of Val.

Van is released from prison after serving 28 years for refusing to give up one of his criminal associates.

"I like the idea of someone being away for that long. Imagine being out of touch for all that time," Pacino said.

:: Stand Up Guys is in cinemas now.
