Partridge gives thanks for success

Steve Coogan's alter-ego Alan Partridge is celebrating after taking the UK box office by storm.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, a big-screen spin-off based on the popular TV character, went straight to number one after taking around £2.18 million in its opening five days, beating out new openers Grown Ups 2 and The Lone Ranger.

"Now is not a time for gloating or celebration, more a time for healing old wounds, a time to say, 'Let us join together in thanks that I am number one at the box office'. Halleluja," said Steve in character.

Its success marks Studiocanal's biggest opening to date in 2013.

Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters came second, recording a debut of around £2.14 million, followed by Adam Sandler's sequel, Grown Ups 2, which brought in around £2.07 million of sales.

Horror thriller The Conjuring is in fourth place, with Johnny Depp's new film The Lone Ranger riding in fifth place.

Last week's number one, The Smurfs 2, dropped down to seventh spot this week.
