Pattinson: Twilight unexpected hit

Robert Pattinson said he didn't think the first Twilight movie would become the success it did

Robert Pattinson has claimed he never expected the first Twilight movie to lead to the hyped franchise that has made him a household name.

The 28-year-old actor became a worldwide heartthrob after starring as vampire Edward Cullen in the five big screen adaptations of Stephenie Meyer's young adult novels about a teenage girl who falls in love with a vampire. The spotlight shone even brighter on R-Patz when it emerged he and Kristen Stewart who starred as his on-screen lover Bella Swan were dating in real life.

Robert told Variety at the Vanity Fair party at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc during the Cannes Film Festival that no one expected the first movie in 2008 to become such a box office hit.

He said: "No one thought it was going to be a big deal. We thought it was going to be like Thirteen," he said, referring to director Catherine Hardwicke's critically acclaimed debut, an indie drama about a rebellious teenage girl.

R-Patz also dashed the hopes of Twilight fans that he will ever reprise the role, saying: "I couldn't do another Twilight movie. I'm too old."

The British actor is at the Canne Film Festival to support his new films The Rover - an Australian action film directed by David Michod and screened out of competition to rave reviews - and Maps To The Stars - a drama directed by David Cronenberg and competing for the Palme d'Or award.

Robert, who worked with Cronenberg on Cosmoplis in 2012, said he would love to continue his collaboration with the director.

"He's incredibly respectful," he said.

R-Patz revealed he's preparing to begin work on actor Brady Corbet's directorial debut, The Childhood Of A Leader, adding that, "Brady is just brilliant".

And Robert also revealed he's been talking to Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine about starring in one of his upcoming projects, although the details have not been finalised.
