Pearce in talks for Iron Man 3 role

Guy Pearce is being linked to a role in Iron Man 3

Guy Pearce is eyeing up a role in superhero sequel Iron Man 3, it has been reported.

The Aussie actor is in talks about playing a geneticist named Aldrich Killian in the next instalment of the blockbuster franchise, according to Variety.

Lockout star Pearce will be joining Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Scarlett Johansson, who will all be reprising their roles.

It has previously been reported that Sir Ben Kingsley is in final negotiations to play the villain in the movie.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, although it is known that the storyline is loosely based on Warren Ellis' Extremis series, which focused on nanotechnology.

In the comics, Killian co-created the Extremis technology and then sold it to terrorists. Kingsley is thought to be playing the terrorist who gets his hands on the technology.

Production on the film is set to get under way in May in North Carolina.
