Penn Badgley is to play late musician Jeff Buckley in the new film Greetings From Tim Buckley.
The Gossip Girl star will play the Lilac Wine singer in the drama which will focus on the days leading up to Jeff's performance at his father Tim's tribute concert in 1991. It also sees Jeff find romance with a young woman who helps him better understand his dad, who died at the age of 28, Collider.com reports.
Penn, 24, said in a statement through production company Smuggler Films: "To play a man who was singularly gifted as an artist, greatly misunderstood and mythologised as a human being... it's something very special and sacred. I'm going to give all I can to this project."
Greetings From Tim Buckley is being directed by co-writer Dan Algrant and is due to begin filming in August.
Jeff himself died tragically young, of accidental drowning aged 30 in 1997.
A biopic about the musician is also in the pipeline and Twilight star Robert Pattinson, who is said to be a huge fan of Jeff, is among those being considered for the role. He has apparently arranged to meet with producers ahead of casting.
