Phoenix close to signing Dr Strange

Joaquin Phoenix is thought to be close to signing up to the Marvel universe as Doctor Strange.

The Walk The Line star has been rumoured to be in negotiations about playing the comic book character for a while, but according to Collider he is about to sign on the dotted line.

Doctor Strange is not due to hit cinemas until July 2016, but Marvel have been keen to sign up the Oscar-nominated star and they are believed to be ironing out the final details of his contract.

It's thought Joaquin has been taking his time over the deal to make sure that he will still have enough free time to work on other projects outside of the Marvel universe.

Other Marvel stars' contracts vary over how long they are tied to the comic adaptations for - Samuel L Jackson is signed up to nine films, while Chris Evans is committed to six.
