Zachary Quinto has said he has to play Mr Spock based on his gut and not on how Star Trek fans might see the role.
The former Heroes star took over the role of the Star Ship Enterprise's First Officer, made famous by Leonard Nemoy in the hit TV show, for JJ Abrams' big screen reboot of the sci fi series.
Zachary - who returns this summer in sequel Star Trek Into Darkness - said the franchise breeds some of Hollywood's most loyal fans, and for the most part the diehards have been "pretty respectful and supportive".
But he added when he is playing Spock: "I can't open myself up to other people's opinions unless they're people I know and trust their opinions."
Speaking about the highly anticipated film he said: "It's exciting, and there's a lot of anticipation. I hope it lives up to people's expectations."
Meanwhile, Zachary is serving with Alanis Morissette as a Kiehl's Earth Day ambassador in the beauty brand's fifth year working with Recycle Across America. The effort aims to standardise recycling labels and collect empty grooming-product jars, and the actor has designed a limited-edition label for facial cream that serves as a fundraiser.
